Tupper Lake 9-Miler

The Tupper Lake canoe and kayak races were held Saturday, June 5 at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. Participants from across New York, Vermont, New Jersey and Quebec paddled a modified course on Simond Pond and the Raquette River in the second of a series of paddle sport events sponsored by Adirondack Watershed Alliance.

All festivities happened at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun club on Simond Road this year due to the significant construction at the usual start line, the DEC Fishing access site on Routes 3 and 30 East of Tupper Lake. Participants crossed Simond Pond and took the channel to the Raquette River where they turned right and paddled upstream and around the Oxbow before headind downstream and following the river around to the Route 30 bridge before they turned left into Simond Pond and paddled to the finish line at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club. The Adirondack Watershed Alliance handed out awards to the top three finishers in each category.

This year’s event featured 60 boats, including recreation, stock and racing canoes, touring and unlimited kayaks, solo and tandem guideboats and three war canoes.
Alain Bullard of Beaconsfield, Quebec led a large field of racing kayaks. He had the fastest time of the day and was fastest among the male kayakers crossing the finish line at 55:20, one second ahead of Jim Mallory of Rochester. Edit Fried, also of Beaconsfield, and the Pointe Claire Kayak Club, finished first among all female kayakers with a time of 59:50. Joseph and Michael Schlimmer of Cortland had the fastest tandem canoe time of the day at 1:00:20. Tony Mercurio of Tupper Lake rowed his hand crafted guideboat to victory in 1:16: 12. Dave Thomas was the fastest of the solo paddlers crossing the line at 1:05:32. Dog Breath, the Voyageur canoe team from Ballston Spa turned in the fastest big boat time at 58:48. The winner of the Byrne dairy Cash Cow raffle was Harold Stata.

The series is sponsored by: Byrne Dairy, We No Nah Canoe, Franklin County Tourism, The Central Adirondack Association, and MAC’S Canoe Livery in Lake Clear. The organizers would like to thank the members Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club for the use of their terrific facility on Simond Pond, The Adirondack Amateur Radio Association and the volunteers who turned out to make the event a success.

Other events in the Adirondack Canoe Race Series include: The Sundowner Series of paddling time trials every other Tuesday of the summer; The 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Classic from Old Forge to Saranac Lake on Sept. 10 – 12; and the Long Lake Long Boat Regatta, September 26.
